Golden Eagles
What to do with old mountain bikes that nobody appears to want, nobody collects, yet were originally manufactured as high quality bicycles?
One day our friend, Amy Meade, came up to me and said, "You look to me like a good scavenger." Amy went on to describe a bicycle that would suit her needs, mainly one with a low step through so that she could ride while wearing her favorite homemade jean skirts.A comfortable saddle, and an upright sitting position would also be nice, she said.
Eventually I found Amy a LandRider auto-shift bicycle that suited her needs (so far). However, this episode started my own wheels working.
While seeking out bikes to restore for Amy, I had found many old, dilapidated mountain bikes for sale for between $10-$100. Most of these bikes were 20 or more years old, and had been neglected (i.e. unserviced) to the point of being unusable, but were very well made with quality components - most are made by well-known bike manufacturers.

Gary Stewart's Trek 930 SingleTrack Golden Eagle
Then Gary Stewart, a neighbor that lives down the street from us, came to me one day and said, "I want you to build me a bike like I had when I was a kid. The kind I can sit up straight on, with a comfortable seat and a rack, a mirror,
and a speedometer like they used to have in the old days."
As it happened, I had recently acquired Trek 930 SingleTrack mountain bike. It had Shimano Acera components that were in great condition, though they were dirty and needed lubrication.
Basically, our idea for converting vintage mountain bikes into proud Golden Eagles derived from Gary's request. By using vintage, high-end mountain bike frames with quality components, bike frames, an economical bike could be custom-built to fit the needs of the owner who is going to ride it.

Cannondale M300 Golden Eagle
Money that would normally be spent on the bike itself can now be used to purchase accessories specific to the individual needs of its new owner.
Golden Eagles are especially beneficial to seniors, since they can be comfort
fitted for normal neighborhood riding rather than the intensive trail and sport
riding the bike was originally designed for.
Since building Gary's Trek, we have built and sold several Golden Eagles
using Cannondale, Univega, Gary Fisher, and Giant mountain bicycle frames. We
even found a Peugeot mountain bike on craigslist which we converted.
Golden Eagles can come with racks, baskets, headlights and taillights. We are
currently working on two full suspension Golden Eagles which should benefit
seniors with arthritis or other physical problems that currently prevent them
from enjoying bicycle riding.
And they are fun to build!
